For Giles, his connection with his Patterdale terriers runs deeper than most could imagine. He was born with a disability, and from his earliest days, a Patterdale named Danny became his silent guardian — always by his side, watching over him, and offering comfort and protection in a way only a dog can. Every childhood photo shows the same loyal companion close by. Now, five generations later, that same lineage of love continues through Nelly and her pups, Nelson and Novella. These dogs aren’t just pets — they’re part of his story, a living reminder of resilience, loyalty, and unconditional love. The photographic experience was a way for Giles to celebrate that lifelong bond and to honour the strength, protection, and joy these dogs have brought into his life.

For Giles and his partner Ruth, the experience was also about creating something that reflected the heart of their home and the life they share. Ruth, who never considered herself a “terrier person,” has since been completely won over by Nelly’s sass and affection. Together, their dogs have filled their days with energy, laughter, and companionship. The photographic session gave them a chance to pause and capture this beautiful chapter — a growing pack full of love, playfulness, and connection. For Giles, who plays for the England Para Football Team, his dogs are a grounding force — always there to remind him of how far he’s come and of the pure, uncomplicated joy they bring every single day.

Their finished artwork now takes pride of place in the sitting room, displayed on the main blue feature wall where it draws the eye the moment you enter.
