FRANKI & SIMBA

Franki came to the photographic experience wanting to celebrate the extraordinary bond she shares with her cocker spaniel, Simba—a golden, soulful companion with a trademark lion-like tail, spiked topknot, and show-dog strut. But this wasn’t just about capturing a beautiful dog; it was about honouring the healing, love, and light Simba has brought into her life and family. Simba isn’t just her pet—he’s her co-therapist, her confidant, and her emotional anchor. As a psychologist and family therapist, Franki has raised Simba alongside her practice. From puppyhood, he’s sat beside her in therapy rooms, becoming an unofficial therapy dog for both humans and dogs. For Franki, this photoshoot was about immortalising not just Simba’s charm, but the incredible impact he has had on the lives of so many.

Simba has helped clients through trauma, silence, and grief—sometimes becoming the first bridge to human connection. One young woman, completely mute, found her voice by speaking through Simba. Another, battling PTSD, was able to open up while Simba sat calmly on her lap, paws resting gently on her shoulders. Simba is also deeply woven into the fabric of Franki’s personal healing. After the loss of a family member, followed quickly by the deaths of two beloved dogs, her home was hollow and heavy. But the day Simba arrived, the energy shifted. The sadness lifted. Simba brought joy and a sense of hope that had been missing. For their family, he is not just a dog—he is a symbol of emotional recovery, light, and love.

The photographic experience helped Franki put a narrative to all of this—a way of acknowledging the depth of her relationship with Simba and the role he plays in her work and personal life. It helped her pause and reflect, to see all that he brings from a different perspective. The artwork now hangs in their hallway or lounge room—somewhere central and visible, a daily reminder of Simba’s quiet strength, goofy charm, and healing heart. It lifts the space, just like Simba lifted their lives. Every time she passes it, Franki feels not only joy but pride, gratitude, and connection.

This experience also allowed Franki a moment to focus on herself—during a special birthday weekend in Saunton with her girlfriends. Though her husband Gary and son Joel weren’t part of this shoot, she hopes they’ll join next time. For now, it’s just her and Simba, captured forever in a piece of artwork that tells their story of love, resilience, and the little dog who healed so much.
